Highland's Parks and Recreation Department is one of the most highly regarded in the metro-east and in Southern Illinois. With thousands of citizens participating in the dozens of community-sponsored programs annually, the department's "Take Time for Fun" motto is adopted by the majority of residents.
The citizens of Highland and the surrounding area enjoy the youth-oriented recreation sports programs and lessons in baseball, softball, basketball, indoor/outdoor soccer, gymnastics, track and field, tennis, archery, roller skating, umpiring clinics and summer playground. Adults participate in recreational basketball, aerobics, volleyball, swimming, fishing, jogging, scuba classes, self-defense classes, adventure races and more. |
If you cannot find what you are looking for in Highland's 200 acres of parks and recreational facilities, the 600-acre Silver Lake Park or 25-acre reservoir, you may discover the value of the Korte Recreational Center. This 41,000 square-foot facility offers an indoor water park that features lap pools, a 120-foot spiral water slide, a Jacuzzi, vortex and lazy river. In addition, the center features a gymnasium, suspended indoor walking and jogging track, a fitness center, a childcare facility, meeting rooms and conference room.

The department also offers a wide variety of programs at the Weinheimer Community Center which has served the community for the past 50 years. The new Senior Drop-In Center provides a convenient recreational area for Highland's senior population. This facility offers Rules of the Road classes, houses the Secretary of State Mobile Driver's Unit bi-monthly visits, hosts the monthly senior citizen group meetings, and offers exercise classes for the community on a regular basis. The facility also offers room rentals for up to 60 people for your meeting or special event.
